EVENT: Miriam of Miriam the Weaver (also known as The Discrete Unicorn) amazing fab hand-dyer
Hosts for weekend: Belinda Harris-Reid and Brenda M. Watson

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

We are thrilled to be welcoming this amazing hand-dyer to guide you through dyeing buckets of yarn for you to use for your own projects or for a pattern in your gift bag.

Miriam, the creative force behind The Discrete Unicorn, has a passion for weaving and dyeing that shines through in every thread she touches. Since launching her business in early 2020, Miriam has become known for her vibrant hand-dyed yarns, which first caught attention online when she showcased her personal knitting projects. Her product range now includes assigned pooling yarns, bold semi-solids, hand-dyed fibre braids, and meticulously handwoven project bags, all designed to bring a burst of colour and texture into every crafter’s life.

Initially trained as a professional weaver running power looms, Miriam’s love for fibre arts extends far beyond the workplace. In her personal time, she explored dyeing yarns for her own weaving practice. The unexpected furlough during March 2020 gave her the chance to channel this passion into a business. Through social media, she shared her vibrant creations, and The Discrete Unicorn quickly gained a loyal following.

Miriam’s approach is all about bringing her colourful world to life. She ensures customers can order yarns in the specific bases and quantities they need, with most of her stock dyed to order. For her first-ever yarn show, however, she’s excited to embrace the challenge of creating ready-to-sell stock while leaning on her experience managing wholesale contracts.

EVENT: Jeanette Sloan work on one of her designs
Host for two day workshop: Jeanette Sloan

Could amalgamate with October 22nd to 26th event TBC

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Colour is very important to me and my design process often begins with a search for an intriguing stitch that will inspire creative juices to flow or a decorative detail that will add a stylish, contemporary edge. I’ve worked as a freelance textile designer and tutor teaching both machine and hand knitting and as 'an accessories obsessive' have written 4 books on hand knitting. I’ve been very lucky to work with some of the best hand knitting brands in the UK and my designs have featured in several UK knitting magazines including Knitting Magazine where I am a regular contributor responsible for the ‘Ask Jeanette’ letters page, Yarn Reviews and A-Z of Techniques.

Jeanette is championing diversity and representation. She is actively bringing these vital and essential conversations to our attention.

She writes: […] there are those who will say that conversations like this are unnecessary and that bringing race or skin colour into knitting and craft is being divisive or perhaps even ‘political correctness gone mad’. To those people I would ask them to imagine not seeing themselves represented on the pages of the magazines and publications they read and thinking how that would make them feel. Unwelcome? Invisible? In some way ‘less than’?….

We are thrilled to be welcoming Jeanette to TKH.
